… that Avengers Arena is a failure. It made money on a short-term basis, but the long-term damage it wrought outweighs any dubious benefits it had, and years on, it has not aged well. If anything, it manages to become worse as time goes on. Normally, I’d rather let people like what they like, but it is a sign of greater maturity to acknowledge the faults of a story while still enjoying it than outright denying their existence.
You forgot one character that Hopeless tried to “leave his mark” on. Alex Wilder.
In whose case his “take” didn’t stick either. After his resurrection, he shows up in Power Man & Iron Fist by David Walker and Sanford Greene and does act more villainous than ever before. But at the same time story basically handwaves events of Undercover with its own explanations for why he is now much more openly evil (spending time in hell with worst of the worst rubbed off him) and why is he a villain (he made a deal to come back in exchange for sending more souls to hell). You could not know about Undercover and think his resurrection was in this book. And by the time of his appearance in new Runaways all of it seems to have been undone and he is back to how he once was (I like the idea Luke Cage scared him straight). And just like with Nico, new Runaways treats Arena and Undercover on the “bring it up as little as possible” and for the best. I suspect Rainbow Rowell already had a much bigger impact on Nico as a character than Hopeless as well.
There is a question how much if any impact Hopeless had on characters he got his hands on in Undercover. And I also think basically none. Zemo was evil before him and stayed evil after and whatever he was scheming was completely forgotten. Madame Masque and Hellstrom were in other books as fast as possible, their role in Undercover once again forgotten. Next time we see Constrictor, he is suddenly a good guy again and immediately dies of cancer, almost makes me wonder if the one in Undercover wasn’t an impostor. Young Masters and other teen villains have not shown up ever since with exception of Enchantress and I feel that there wasn’t anything to actually influence how she was written in Illuminatti since all Young Masters did in Undercover was to…. exist. They could be replaced with a bunch of lamposts and nothing would change.
Also, I bet you next time we see Deathlocket, Anachronism or Cullen Bloodstone it will be so they can be killed for shock value, the irony of ironies. And their, and Arena/Undercover as a whole. fans seem to been people of the same sort who now defend Heroes in Crisis – people who seem to only pick up the book because it promised to change things and be big and important and they think all this blood and murder makes the look more adult.
I will argue, however, that Hopeless had left an impact on one character. Arcade. Because even if other writers almost immediately tried to backtrack, you don’t do something so horrible and just go back to being a joke villain, it changes how fandoms will see you Except when Hopeless thought he is giving Arcade treatment that will turn him into somebody akin to Joker or Black Manta, he instead turned him into, as tvtropes would (and actually did) put it, Alternate Company Equivalent of this guy
also guys i think it’s time to start spelling ‘small’ right again,, it’s been long enough
see the thing is, at this point, smol isn’t even a “mispelling” of small anymore; it has its own connotations. while small is a regular adjective, smol acts more like a diminutive marker, which English has been lacking
in essence, a smol dog will always be a small dog, but not all small dogs are smol.
THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING
Small = size indication, smol = precious and small
I just want to point out that similar things have happened before. “Cute” is originally a variation on “acute”, and now people don’t even think of them as related.
Okay so the other day I was taking the trash out and my nail caught on a spider egg sac!
Unfortunately it split open and all the little eggs came tumbling out and luckily landed in a box.
After getting them all in a glass, I was left with several questions, no answers and guilt! But I asked in a few spider groups and got a tutorial on making a spider incubator!
Sooo! We went through a few different stages of mini Orbeez
And by mini I mean REALLY mini!
But finally we started seeing development!
See the little white dot?! That’s a wee lil baby!
Then more started showing up!
Then the day came!! Little legs started showing up!!
And then!!!
Today I just went to look and!!
!!!
MY BABIES ARE HATCHING!
Update
They’re perfect in every way and I love my dumb spider babies.
This is Joseph. He’s learning to walk properly.
He’s not very good at it yet though.
He try his best.
He has a fucking :3 on his face.
Spiders are so precious
Once I was out at a park just chilling, and noticed a mom spider carrying her bundled up egg sac. I must have startled her because she dropped it while passing in front of me. I was so upset, but was carefully able to gently stick the sac on my finger tip and offer it out to her. She took it back without issue and continued on her way, and to this day it still remains one of my favourite tragic turned cute memories.
As a result of spending time on the set of soap operas for celebrity cameo appearances, Lily knows slightly more about some topics than the other girls would be comfortable
