This is not my story. This was told to me by a woman I knew from work several years ago; she’s a very sweet nurse.
Nurse graduated from nursing school and decided with her friend to
move to one of the cities that was listed as having “the most eligible
bachelors” from some publication. She moves and starts dating her future
husband.
Future Husband’s mother is a viper and decides Nurse is not good
enough for her family. The happy couple eventually get engaged and
future mother-in-law is having none of it. Tries for several months to
break them up; tries to convince Nurse to go back where she came from
and simultaneously tries to gently convince her precious son that Nurse
may not be good for him.
To add some more context to this situation, this MIL is pretty nasty
to Nurse but hides it well to other people, always making sure she’s
super (fake) sweet to everyone when others are around.
Finally wedding plans are set so MIL gets desperate. She gets Nurse
alone with a “generous” offer: leave fiance and never come back in
exchange for $10,000 (note: this was almost 30 years ago so I guess it
was kind of a shitload of money for most).
Nurse is so sick of this woman’s shit and is incredibly insulted.
However, she’s intelligent and maintains her composure. Nurse accepts
the offer.
Nurse takes the money, does not leave, and gets married anyway. Nobody else knows about this.
MIL cannot say or do anything about it without exposing herself to her family as a horrible person.
Nurse and husband are still happily married; their kids are grown; husband still has no idea this went down.
MIL has suffered silently for almost 30 years.
This is amazing.

why has nobody mentioned the fact that in australia there are 3-4 months a year where everybody just accepts that they’re going to get attacked by magpies. It is literally called “swooping season” and these birds will fly down to peck your fucking face, and people get their eyes ripped out and shit, it’s fucking brutal.
My teacher had to go to hospital and have surgery because of swooping season. It was in the parking lot of school and all the kids would do a mad dash towards the car as the magpies tried to kill us.

Interesting thing about magpies – they’re not great at identifying individual humans visually, but if you make yourself identifiable in some way they’re usually open to reason. We used to have some very aggressive swoopers in our back yard – as soon as they realised that the humans *inside* the fence never bothered them and were the source of the delicious compost heap, they turned into flying black and white guard dogs who would viciously assault any passing stranger but never bothered anyone inside the yard. Several times they swooped at us when we approached from outside, then when we walked into the yard they would pull up and act incredibly apologetic like sorry ma’am I had no idea it was you I would never please don’t stop stocking the food pile.
There was another little group of magpies in the park who would attack any solo pedestrian but never bothered anyone walking a dog or pushing a pram, because apparently those were identifiable traits indicating a non-threatening human. In the spirit of inquiry, I started going out of my way to be polite to the magpies – carefully walking a wide arc around them when they were on the ground, etc – and emitting an identifiable call of ‘hello birdie’ before swooping season started.
I spent the next ten years crossing that park at least once a day and as long as I turned at the first flutter of wings and said ‘hello birdie’ to the magpie waiting to attack as soon as my back was turned, I was fine. Every time, the magpie would stare at me for a minute and then fly off to harass some other pedestrian because apparently the magpies and I, we were cool.
Parrots are a lot less open to negotiation, and the little bastards travel in flocks. Beware the parrots.
Australia: the only country where it is necessary to sign a peace treaty with the birds in order to stay unmangled.

Harvey Weinstein’s political allies aren’t falling for his shtick of
promising to repent and to “channel [his] anger” toward Wayne LaPierre
and the NRA. Over the past two weeks, he has been ritually denounced by
practically every entertainment industry collaborator and political
beneficiary he collected over a remarkable three-decade career in
pictures and politics.
Yet Weinstein is just the latest in a long
line of men whose left-wing politics coexisted harmoniously with
retrograde attitudes about women. In his statement, Weinstein said that
he “came of age in the 60’s and 70’s, when all the rules about behavior
and workplaces were different.” Many people scoffed at this explanation,
as this was precisely the time when women’s liberation brought
workplace sexism to the societal forefront. But Weinstein was right in a
way he didn’t comprehend. Ever since second-wave feminism became part
of the political left, there have been men who, ostensibly enlightened
in the realm of gender relations, are in fact deeply misogynist and
believe that their progressive street cred somehow obviates their
attitudes about women, attitudes as regressive as those held by the Mad Men-era males who ruled the earth just before the sexual revolution.
Revolutionary
movements, often preaching violence and imbued with machismo, lend
themselves easily to chauvinism. Andreas Baader, who formed an eponymous
West German terrorist organization in 1970 with feminist journalist
Ulrike Meinhof, spoke of all women as “cunts.” Like Baader, who would be
remembered solely as a criminal had he not adopted a revolutionary
political agenda to justify his gang’s murder and bombing spree, the
leaders of the Black Panther Party preached a more equitable world while
subjugating the women in their midst. The party newspaper railed against abortion
as “a victory for the oppressive ruling class who will use [abortion]
to kill off Black and other oppressed people before they are born,” and
the birth control pill as “another type of genocide that the power
structure has poured into the Black community.” It once expelled a
member for terminating a pregnancy, and according
to historian Kate Coleman, the group “punished rank-and-file females
for even minor ‘infractions’ by turning them out as prostitutes.”
In his memoir Soul on Ice, Panther “Minister of Information” Eldridge Cleaver
wrote of how he viewed rape as an “insurrectionary act.” After he
“practiced” on black women, he moved onto white ones, as “it delighted
me that I was defying and trampling upon the white man’s law, upon his
system of values, and that I was defiling his women.” Panther Party
co-founder and “Minister of Defense” Huey Newton talked a good game when
it came to female equality, publishing a letter in the party newspaper reproving sexism (and homophobia) and declaring “we recognize the women’s right to be free.” Yet Newton authorized the beating of the woman who managed the Panther Liberation School after she reprimanded a male colleague. Oh, and he murdered a 17-year-old prostitute because she referred to him as “baby.”
“Radical Chic,”
the romanticizing of violent revolutionary leftists by genteel
bourgeois liberals, was coined by Tom Wolfe in 1970 to describe the
party Leonard Bernstein hosted at his Park Avenue Penthouse for the
Panthers. The phenomenon has long since been a feature of progressive
politics. Gerry Healy was a Stalinist who led Britain’s Workers
Revolutionary Party, an “anti-imperialist” groupuscule partly funded by
Muammar Qadafi and Saddam Hussein, whose more presentable patrons
included Vanessa and Corin Redgrave. According
to his former secretary, this man of the people used apartments owned
by the party in a “completely opportunist way for sexual liaisons” to
“degrade women and girl comrades and destroy their self-respect.”
Ultimately, some 26 women accused Healy of “gross sexual abuse.”
According to Vanessa Redgrave, however, “these allegations are all lies
and the women who are supposed to have made them are all liars. I don’t
care whether it’s 26, 36 or 236. They are all liars.” Believe All Women,
in other words, except those who accuse our Dear Leader.

Black Trans Man Arrested, Immediate Bail Support Needed.

Earlier today, Dean, a Black Trans masculine person was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, after a routine traffic stop. After being stopped, he was questioned repeatedly about the validity of his driver’s license. The officer believed that Dean was deceiving him, lying about his identity. Dean was taken to the detention center.
This happens often to Trans people who are unable to change the gender marker/name on their license. Because of the officer’s transphobia, he assumed Dean was lying.
Some of you maybe familiar with Dean, an Atlanta -based community organizer and activist. He is currently being detained at the Atlanta City Detention Center. He has been placed with the “female” population, where he will be kept until his community, family, and friends raise bail.

December 5 is Krampusnacht, so here’s a Krampus fact for you!
Although Christmas was celebrated within Nazi Germany, many of those in power attempted to remove any references to Judaism, replacing references to Jesus with Hitler (the “Fuhrer Saviour”), or reinterpreting elements of the holiday to be more in line with their version of “pre-Chrisitian Germanic traditions”.
One example of this was an attempt to insist that Santa Claus was actually a Christian reinvention of Odin, leading to a brief attempt at the Nazis trying to depict Odin acting within the same gift-giving capacity.
However, it perhaps shouldn’t be surprising that the Nazi’s approach was entirely self-serving and hypocritical, as despite there being actual pre-Christian traditions surviving at the time, the fascists attempted to stifle them as they weren’t politically useful.
A notable example of this is of the folkloric character of Krampus, a devil-figure who evolved over time to be the stick to Santa’s carrot in the “making kids behave“ game. In Austria in the 1930s, Krampus was almost as popular as Saint Nick himself, starring in such seasonal things as a greetings cards (see main image, from the 1920s, where oddly Krampus appears to be dressed as Alucard from Hellsing).
