I’ve been thinking about that Grinch movie idea and little bits of dialogue have been popping into my brain, and I’m pretty sure I’d have at least one small line where the Grinch references his “cousin Onceler,” just to canonize the “The Onceler and the Grinch are the same species” idea.

OOO!  OOOOO!  And the Cat in the Hat could be Cat Z, the infinitesimally small Cat in the Hat from The Cat in the Hat Comes Back!  Because Whoville exists on a speck of dust, so it would follow that its Cat in the Hat must be the super tiny cat!

Another thought re: Into the Spider-Verse – it’s nice that we’re finally getting homages to/spoofs of anime in cartoons that were made by people who actually WATCHED anime, as opposed to fifty year old cartoonists in the 90′s who think all Anime is Speed Racer.

Oh good, I was worried about that aspect.

Both Peni Parker and Spider-Ham provide a bit of meta commentary in the defense of their respective forms of 2D animation.  I just read an article where the animators talked about how they tried to break every rule they had learned with CGI, and ended up looking to comic books, old cartoons, and anime for the unique ways they break with reality in order to produce a unique and beautiful style.  One guy in the article specifically pointed out how Anime provided a lot of the solutions they wanted to provide a sense a motion without using realistic motion blurrs.

This is a movie for people who LOVE animation, by people who love animation.  It’s a CGI movie that went out of its way to be detached from reality, and the result is so beautifully stylized.

I just love Into the Spider-Verse a lot.

Still weird that Peni Parker was inspired by more serious style anime (Evangelion main cast cameo in her school) , but they can make up for it by introducing more Peni Parkers representing other genres in sequels.

I think it was for tonal issues.  There’s a lot of dark stuff in the movie, and in many ways the other Spider-People have an important job of providing comic relief (while still getting serious moments – Spider-Ham has one of the most earnest and heart rending lines in the movie, and it happens when you’d least expect it).

Spider-Noir’s books are also very dark, and the movie shows that while also playing it a bit for laughs because of how jarring that is compared to the others.  The end result is a story where none of the Spider-People are complete jokes, but also none of them are completely serious – which is really where a Spider-Man story should land, honestly.

Plus Peni Parker was fun as hell in the movie.

Thats why I don’t blame them for doing it in this movie. I understand completely. I just have a dream sequel with Supaidaman and Anya Corazon and one or more new variant of Peni Parker.

And for all I know, the comics Peni Parker may have fallen flat.
