There’s gonna be a Dora the Explorer movie?  That show barely had enough plot to fill a twenty two minute episode – a third of its run time was spent on dead air where the characters sit and look at the screen after asking the audience a question, and half was spent repeating phrases multiple times to make kids memorize clues.

It’s like making a full length movie of a Dr. Seuss book oh fuck wait they’ve done that multiple times and they were all terrible.

Still like Bogleech I greatly respect Swiper as a character concept. A jerk who steals things only to throw things away? Brilliant.

ancient writers and historians: cleopatra wasn’t especially beautiful, caesar and antony were attracted to her because she was so charismatic and intelligent

all subsequent artists, filmmakers, game developers, etc:

Actually no one knows what she really looked like because all contemporary depictions of her are completely different. Egyptian art makes her look Egyptian (but isn’t representational anyway), Greek art makes her look Greek (and is more likely to be representational), one really bad coin makes her look like a grandma who wants to eat your kidneys.

Regardless of what she actually looked like and the beauty standards of the time, anything Romans said about her is 100% propaganda anyway.

Would Sonic be a better character if he was gay?

crusherthedoctor:

No. Because it doesn’t have an effect on his personality one way or the other.

Contrary to the borderline fetishistic obsession that people on sites like this have, a character is not automatically improved by changing their sexuality, or their gender, or their race, and so on.

I understand fully that representation is important, but if your way of “improving” an iconic character with a defined history and personality boils down to little more than making them gay, bi, trans, etc, and then having them flaunt their newfound sexuality/gender/etc every waking moment, at the expense of their entire personality… it’s usually a sign that you care more about getting internet brownie points than you do treating the character with respect. (It also indicates that you see the trait in question as merely something that makes you “cool”, which is pretty damn shallow.)

On top of that, the Sonic franchise in particular rarely deals with the characters’ sexualities anyway, so making Sonic gay wouldn’t make a difference in canon regardless.

Gay Sonic is just as afraid of committment as Heterosexual Sonic.

1985: National Geo make millions from ‘Afghan Girl’ portrait

2016: Still has the status of a refugee and may spend 14 years in jail because of her papers

I fucking hate this picture and everything it represents. Steve McCurry made millions off of this picture and its what launched his photojournalism career into the spotlight. While the woman in this picture got absolutely NOTHING and lived an awful and horrific existence. And calling her “Afghan Girl” is so disrespectful. Her name is Sharbat Gula and her life could have been made 1000X easier had McCurry shared his wealth with her – or even if he couldn’t find her, to share it with of refugees who he exploited. And honestly the idea of a white man going into wartorn nations (that are that way bc of american imperialism) to take pictures of refugees to profit off of their pain and trauma is gross

ok let me just say yes many white photographers are pieces of shit but boy this didn’t include several pertinent facts worth knowing:

More recent pictures of Gula were featured as part of a cover story on her life in the April 2002 issue of National Geographic and she was the subject of a television documentary, entitled Search for the Afghan Girl, which aired in March 2002. In recognition of her,[21]National Geographic set up the Afghan Girls Fund, a charitable organization with the goal of educating Afghan girls and young women.[22] In 2008, the scope of the fund was broadened to include boys and the name was changed to Afghan Children’s Fund.[23] After finding Gula, National Geographic also covered the costs of medical treatment for her family, and paid for the costs of a pilgrimage to Mecca.[24]

and:

McCurry made several unsuccessful attempts during the 1990s to locate her.[11] In January 2002, a National Geographic team traveled to Afghanistan to locate the subject. McCurry, upon learning that the Nasir Bagh refugee camp was soon to close, inquired of its remaining residents, one of whom knew Gula’s brother and was able to send word to her hometown. However, a number of women came forward and identified themselves erroneously as the famous Afghan Girl. In addition, after being shown the 1984 photo, a handful of young men erroneously identified Gula as their wife.

and:

On 26 October 2016, Gula was arrested in Pakistan by the Federal Investigation Agency for living in the country using forged documents.[15][16] She was sentenced to fifteen days in detention, and she was deported to Afghanistan.[14][17] The decision was criticised by Amnesty International.[14] In Kabul, Gula and her children were welcomed by President Ashraf Ghani and former President Hamid Karzai at the presidential palace. The government promised to support her financially.[18] In December 2017, Gula was gifted a 3,000-square-foot (280 m2) residence in Kabul for her and her children to live in.[19]

and because it really has effected so many people with awareness and compassion for the subject matter:

It has been likened to Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Mona Lisa[2][3] and has been called “the First World’s Third World Mona Lisa”.[4] The image became “emblematic” of “refugee girl/woman located in some distant camp” deserving of the compassion of the Western viewer.[5]

and yes i shamelessly cut and past wiki but i checked other articles too. also it didn’t seem like some of the posters were willing to do a five min search about the lady they were protective of. yes be protective–but research too.

Okay, game reviewers, if you’re gonna remark that a game is “short for its price point” because it can be completed ”in a single sitting”, I’m gonna need you to specify whether that’s a normal person’s single sitting, or a person who plays video games for a living’s single sitting, because these are very different things.
