hot take: ‘chivalry’ is fine as long as it’s adapted to 21st century values. if you are a male, you SHOULD be aware that your female friends face certain issues that you as a male dont. acting on that awareness in a way that keeps your female friends safe, isn’t a bad thing.
like… opening doors isn’t rly chivalrous when it’s just a thing you ought to do for everyone. but real 21st century chivalry might be, like, standing between your female friend and the guy that’s trying to get her drunk, or offering to walk her home when it’s late.
if the ‘chivalry’ inconveniences everyone involved and you’re just doing it for your over-inflated male ego — ie, “no you’re the girl here, you HAVE to let me hold this door for you and do all these things for you even when you can do it yourself and im just slowing you down” — then it’s just outdated misogyny.
Chivalry was literally designed to make nobles aware of their power and influence so they don’t unintentionally harm people when trying to do their job of leading and protecting people. Modern chivalry should carry on that sentiment of men and white people becoming aware of their own power of privilege and influence to help and protect the lives of their peers.
*Not to inflate their egos, but because it’s the good thing to do and makes the world a better place to be.
Chivalry, at its core, involves being helpful to people who don’t have your advantages.
It involved generosity and protecting those weaker than oneself: including opening doors when doors were made of badly fit heavy wood and often got stuck, and women, especially undernourished exhausted-from-childcare women, had a harder time opening them. It involved not lying, and following through on your promises. (A guy who is consistently late with the accounting reports, which delays the whole team, is not dedicated to chivalry, no matter how polite he is on a date.)
Chivalry is a code of ethics that involves dedicating one’s strength and skills in service to others; it’s not based on gender roles.

I remember hearing a lot of chivalry code actually being about keeping your horse from accidentally trampling people.
That is also true, seeing as it was a code for noblemen who were also mounted knights. But “chivalry” refers to a LOT of things beyond just the code of Chivalry – it’s also a whole genre of medieval fiction and stuff.
In a roleswap Catra would honestly really be enthusiastic as a hero … for completely nonmoral reasons.
Catra’s disdain for princesses seems to come from cynicism and pride of being too smart to fall for the fear-mongering propaganda.
If an artifact gave her awesome power and loyal admirers, the right context and a receptive emotional state would cause her to leave (most of) that disdain at the door.
Catra’s main motivators are a desire for validation, and power so no one can hurt her.
She’d see powers granted to her and the Princess Alliance as tools of revenge to be wielded against all in the Horde who ever wronged her. Which would definitely cause a lot of friction with Glimmer and Angela.
Her reunion with Adora would have her going “join me Adora and we can rule …together!”
And likely end with “You never believed in me! You’re jealous! You want me to just be your loyal sidekick!”
(Also , since Shadow Weaver probably wouldn’t send out a search party to get Catra, their reunion would be later on than it was in the show.)
The sad thing is she would be more receptive to Light Hope’s manipulations than Adora, at first finding herself agreeing with Light Hope about her friends holding her back.
I don’t know why Scorpia would end up working with Adora; but I lean towards Shadow Weaver callously treating Scorpia as a replacement goldfish in an attempt to cheer Adora up about Catra’s defection.
They would be so much worse at being evil together than Catra and Scorpia. It would be adorably wholesome.
Princess Prom would be less eventful and calmer at least, with Adora simply using it to gather intelligence rather than staging a terrorist attack… If she can manage to give an inspirational speech to convince Scorpia to attend which I’m honestly not sure she could pull off.
Notice I didn’t necessarily Catra would get the sword in this AU. I could just as easily see her getting some other First One Tech that allowes her to turn into a magical feline monster like in the original series. Bonus points if it turns out to have been used by a sidekick of one of the past She-Ra’s, for added insult.
Also, I like the idea of her oddly enjoying being a corrupting influence on Perfuma
“I can only make flowers.”
“Can’t you make poisonous ones?”
Later , as the Horde lies twitching and agony.
Bow: This feels wrong somehow.
Glimmer: I’m fine with it.
And I can’t help but think Mermista meeting would end with the gate not being shattered, but it also not being fully recharged. The best they can do is basically put a bandaid on it.
After being a bit more emotionally open from running on adrenaline and anger with Adora “betraying her” and refusing to switch sides in their reunion; Catra convinces Mermista that its better to run away to fight another day.
“Look you got nothing to stay here for. So why do it? These parents people? Your citizens are gone. The gates breaking. But you can make live another day and make the Horde suffer for putting you in this position! ””
Catra would be asking Mermista to join the Alliance not as a princess, but as a warrior.
Glimmer would of be very upset by how unoptimistic it is , especially if Queen Angella agrees Catra’s arguments were sound. Glimmer thought having Catra would change things, was thrilled they got Perfuma’s kingdom on her side only for Catra to now undermine her optimismistic worldview.
Later I can see Castaspeella and Entrapta working together to fix the gate, but until then it would be a ghost town that gets occupied by a skeleton crew of Horde soldiers setting up watchtowers.
Also, if go with the idea of her super form being a monstrous cat rather than She-Ra, a fun running gag could be she only tolerates water when in her cat form.
I imagine her exitedly swimming to the boat after seing Adora in the distance, and all her old teammates freaking out at this monstrous cat knowing their names before she transforms back to humanoid form. (Kyle of course gets told to get out of the way.)
And oh dear, what would the meeting with Light Hope be like…
“You know what? No. Bow, Glimmer and the others might sometimes hold me back but they’re there when I need them unlike Adora was!
And you want me to not only forget about them, but make up with Adora, give her a magic sword and let her upstage me again as this She-Ra?! Let me out of here or I am going to finish the job and break you completely!”
*note I do not agree that Adora was never there for Catra. But her anger is really channelling as I write this. She feels just as betrayed at Adora in this au for not defecting with her as she does in the main series for defecting.
Spotlight on OZ character, Tik-Tok. Why was I so fascinated by him as a kid? I even gave him a brief cameo in my animated STAR WARS video. He had so much personality. A steampunk Sgt. Pepper robot.
He was the star of one of the first OZ productions in 1913, image 3 is sheet music from that show. The first two images are by famous OZ illustrator John R. Neill, 1914. A great, creepy design. Image 4 is a maquette from RETURN TO OZ (1985), and 5 a shiny model from that film used for one of the final scenes (Tik-Tok is dirty throughout the film except at the very end). The last image shows what the character looked like in the 1980s Japanese cartoon version.
I have some difficult news. Today, Google has decided to stop monetizing Tale Foundry.
This means the show will no longer receive money from Youtube for the videos we post there. This won’t stop us—nothing could stop us from creating and sharing this thing that we love so much—but it is terrifying. That revenue was a large chunk of money that paid for artists and services we use to keep the show running.
Frankly, I’m not too sure what will happen now.
One thing is for certain, though: the videos will continue to come out. At every expense and sacrifice from the Tale Foundry team, they will be made.
It’s just a difficult time for the show.
Thank you for your patience and your love. Expect a video about this soon.
Why the hell would Gogole/Youtube do that? It makes no sense whatsoever to just stop monetizing a wholesome, educational show that analyzes literary tropes. I knew these folk are dumb but this is ridiculous.
