“It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s an– algae!? Best known through grainy weather balloon photos and hollow watermelon-sized black lumps turning up in people’s cornfields, Trichodesmium astroidea has inspired both curiosity and bemused speculation about extraterrestrial origin.”
Preview of my 2-page spread for Almost Real: A Speculative Biology Zine! I had really wanted to make something with cyanobacteria since speculative biology tends to focus a lot on animals, but prokaryotes do some incredibly wild and bizarre stuff here on Earth without any human creative intervention. Plus it was an excuse to learn more about digital painting, since I didn’t think line art would compliment such simple structures. I hope you’ll enjoy learning about my funky little sky cryptids!
my favorite scp ever is scp 1171 and i just discovered them yesterday.
they live in a different dimension and can only communicate through writing on the constantly foggy windows of the house they inhabit. their name is beauremont. and they just. fucking hate humans. it’s so funny. and the best part is that they befriend someone in our dimension who works for the scp, not realizing that they’re human, and so that human is just sorta their roommate now because they’re the only one who doesn’t piss beauremont off. it’s so fucking funny.
there’s a new species of jumping spider…. and it feeds its babies milk.
“chen et al. describe an ant-mimicking jumping spider that secretes a nutritious milk-like substance on which its young offspring are entirely dependent. The spider also continues to care for the spiderlings as they mature and become independent.”
by popular request here’s a picture of the new jumping spider species that produces milk, toxeus magnus. its milk contains 2 milligrams of sugar per milliliter of liquid, 5.2 milligrams of fat and a whopping 124 milligrams of protein, and researchers suggest it may be made from unviable eggs.
Toxeus magnus isn’t actually a new species – it was named back in 1933 – but the milk-feeding discovery is new, and if anything that make this even more amazing. We’ve known about this spider for 85 years and only just noticed it was doing this.
has anyone else theorized that tae might be related to kotaro? like, his aunt or even his mother? maybe further back than that, like his grandmother, so all he knows about her are stories about how awesome she was, thus making her legendary?
any other thoughts? maybe about how she apparently likes going into different travel agencies?
Ooh! That’s a good call! Friends and I had a few theories, but they mostly amounted to her being his daughter, his wife, or a close friend. I like the idea of her being someone he heard about in stories, though. That would be so cute!
